Story
For decades, Keith Richards’ legendary “Micawber” has been almost as recognizable as the riffs he created with it. The heavily modified ’50s Telecaster famously had its low E string removed and was tuned to open G (G–D–G–B–D) creating the unique five-string foundation behind some of rock’s most enduring rhythm guitar work.
The K.R. Mad Cat 5 takes that iconic idea one step further. Rather than adapting a conventional six-string, it is purpose-built from the ground up as the five-string guitar that never was. Everything, from the neck and nut to the bridge and string spacing, is designed specifically around five strings and open-G tuning, delivering a more natural, balanced playing experience without an unused tuner, empty saddle or awkward gap where a sixth string once lived.
Its electronics take inspiration from another fascinating detail of the original. Micawber has long been believed to feature early Broadcaster-style wiring, which replaces the conventional tone control with a pickup blend control. We’ve recreated that arrangement here, allowing you to progressively blend the second pickup into the primary signal and explore a range of textures beyond the usual fixed pickup selections.
The result is more than a visual tribute. The K.R. Mad Cat 5 is a dedicated open-G machine built for ringing chords, muscular rhythms, and the loose, swaggering riffs that only seem to come alive when one string gets out of the way.
